About Key & Crate
A room-by-room buying site for people setting up a first apartment, a dorm or a first house — written by one person, funded by Amazon commissions, and deliberately honest about what we have not tested.
Why this site exists
If you search for “first apartment essentials checklist” today, you get lists of nouns. Cookware. Towels. A shower curtain. A plunger. Several of the top results are genuinely well-written — three thousand words from a respected home publication, a long explainer from a bank — and none of them tells you which one to buy or what it costs. One of the top results was last updated in 2020 and carries no byline at all.
Which misses the actual problem. The hard part of moving is not knowing you need towels. It is standing in a shop deciding which towels, forty times in one week, while trying to work out whether you can afford all of it and whether the sofa will get up the stairs.
So this site does one thing differently. Every line of every checklist names a pick, shows what it costs today, and links straight to it — with a running total per room. You can follow our picks, or ignore them entirely and use the totals to plan a budget. Both are more useful than a list of nouns.
There are currently 77 guides across 5 sections, and the picks on them carry live prices that are re-checked daily.
Who writes this
Key & Crate is written by Mike M., the hands-on owner behind Iron Mako Media, which publishes this site.
I want to be precise about what that does and does not mean, because this is where most buying sites start overstating things.
What it means: one person reads the specifications, compares the realistic options for the constraint the reader actually has — a small kitchen, a lease, a budget that has to cover forty items — and names a pick with the reasoning attached. Where I would buy the cheaper thing, I say so. Where I would buy secondhand and earn nothing from it, I say that too.
What it does not mean: I do not run a test lab, a test kitchen or a workshop. There is no panel of experts. I hold no professional certification relevant to any of these products, and I will not claim one. Our methodology page sets out exactly what our picks are based on instead, and it is a deliberately short list.
How this site makes money
Key & Crate is an Amazon Associate. When you buy something through one of our links, Amazon pays us a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the entire business model.
It never decides a pick. Specifically:
- Where the cheaper option is the better buy for the reader, we rank it first — even though it pays less.
- Where the right answer is to buy something secondhand, or not to buy at all, we say so. We earn nothing from either.
- We do not accept payment for placement, and no manufacturer has ever reviewed a page before it was published.
- Where we cannot verify a figure, the page says so rather than guessing at it.

Why there are no customer reviews on this site
You will not find testimonials, star ratings from readers, or “what our customers say” anywhere here. That is deliberate and worth stating plainly: we have none to publish, so we publish none.
Writing fake testimonials is common, trivially easy and deeply dishonest. We have never written one and we never will. If and when we have real feedback worth showing, it will be attributed and sourced.
The same applies to product ratings. The scores on our roundups are our own editorial judgment, clearly labeled as such, with every component metric shown rather than just a total. They are not aggregated customer ratings, and we do not present them as review data in our structured markup, because that would imply a kind of testing we have not done.
Corrections, and how to tell us we are wrong
We will get things wrong. Prices move, products get discontinued, specifications change silently between production runs, and sometimes a judgment is simply bad.
If you spot something — a price that looks wrong, a spec that is out of date, a recommendation that did not hold up in practice — please tell us. Corrections to factual errors are made on the page itself, and the “last updated” date changes to reflect it.

Publisher
Key & Crate is published by Iron Mako Media. It is a national US publication with no physical premises, no showroom and no phone line — which is why you will find no address or telephone number anywhere on the site. Email is the way to reach us, and we read it.
