How much does it cost to furnish a first apartment?

Between about $1,100 and $4,000 depending on how much you buy new. Here is the room-by-room arithmetic, plus the move-in costs that are not furniture at all.

By Mike M.Last updated

Furnishing a first one-bedroom apartment costs roughly $1,100 at the budget tier, $2,200 mid, and $4,000 or more buying everything new. Essentials — kitchen, bathroom, tools, consumables — are about $450 to $1,700 of that; the rest is furniture, where buying used makes the largest difference of any decision you will make.

The three tiers, and what separates them

Total cost by tier, one-bedroom apartment
BudgetMidNew everything
Kitchen$190$420$750
Bathroom and laundry$95$230$400
Bedroom (incl. mattress)$280$620$1,300
Living room$130$500$1,000
Tools and safety$85$190$300
Consumables and forgotten items$70$110$160
Dining$50$180$400
Totalabout $900about $2,250about $4,300

The difference between tiers is almost entirely used versus new furniture and whether you buy a sofa. Essentials vary much less — a budget kitchen is $190 against a premium $750, which is real but small next to a $500 sofa.

Furniture: where the tiers actually diverge

Furniture, used vs new
ItemUsedNew budgetNew midNotes
Mattress (queen)— buy new$200$500Hygiene. The one thing not to buy used.
Bed frame$40$120$280A frame is a frame. Check for all bolts.
Sofa$80$300$700The biggest single swing. Measure the route.
Dining table + 2 chairs$50$150$350Often free on local marketplaces.
Desk + chair$40$130$300Used office chairs are abundant and good.
Bookshelf / storage$20$60$150Flat-pack secondhand is a fraction of retail.
Lamps (2)$15$40$90Plug used ones in before paying.
Curtains and rods— buy new$60$140Measure the window. Tension rods need no drilling.
Rug$25$70$200Easy to add later. Used is a gamble.

Buying every one of those used instead of new-mid saves roughly $2,000. That is the single largest financial decision in furnishing a first apartment, and it mostly costs you time and a vehicle rather than quality.

The move-in costs that are not furniture

These are frequently left out of furnishing budgets and are often larger than the furniture.

  • Security deposit: typically one month’s rent, sometimes more.
  • First month’s rent, and sometimes the last month up front.
  • Application and admin fees: $50 to $200.
  • Utility deposits and connection fees: $0 to $300 depending on the provider and your credit history.
  • Internet installation: $0 to $100, plus a router if you do not rent one.
  • Renters insurance: $12 to $25 a month, often required by the lease. Cheap, and worth having regardless.
  • Moving van or movers: $50 for a small van you drive, $400 to $1,200 for movers.
  • Parking permit for the van, in some cities.
  • The first grocery shop, which is unusually large: $150 to $250 because you are buying oil, salt, spices and every staple at once.

Realistically, budget two to three times the monthly rent in total move-in costs before you have bought a single pan.

How to spread it out

You do not need all of it in week one, and spreading the spend is what keeps the total down — you end up buying what you actually need rather than what you anticipated.

  1. Night one (~$180): bedding, towels, shower curtain, plunger, toilet paper, soap, basic plates, a lamp.
  2. Week one (~$320): cookware, knife, boards, dish rack, trash cans, cleaning supplies, curtains.
  3. Month one (~$350): microwave, food storage, bathroom storage, tool kit, safety items, a drying rack.
  4. Months two to six: the sofa, the rug, a coffee maker, the second small appliance, decoration. By then you know your space.

The short version

  • Budget tier about $900, mid about $2,250, everything new about $4,300 for a one-bedroom.
  • The tiers diverge on furniture, not essentials. Buying used instead of new saves roughly $2,000.
  • Move-in costs excluding furniture run two to three times monthly rent. Plan for that first.
  • Spread the spend across night one, week one and month one. You will spend less in total.

Common questions

How much does it cost to furnish a first apartment?

Roughly $900 at the budget tier, $2,250 mid, and $4,300 buying everything new for a one-bedroom. The difference is almost entirely used versus new furniture, with the sofa and mattress as the two biggest single lines.

How much should I save before moving into my first apartment?

Two to three times the monthly rent for move-in costs alone — deposit, first month, fees, utility connections, a van and an unusually large first grocery shop — before any furniture. Add $900 upward for furnishing on top.

What is the most expensive part of furnishing an apartment?

The sofa and the mattress. A sofa swings from about $80 used to $700 new-mid, and a mattress from $200 to $500 — and should be bought new. Everything in the kitchen and bathroom together is usually less than one new sofa.

Can you furnish an apartment for under $1,000?

Yes — about $900 including a new mattress, if you buy the budget picks for essentials and source furniture used from local marketplaces, thrift stores and Buy Nothing groups. See apartment essentials on a budget for that version in full.

What move-in costs do people forget?

Utility deposits and connection fees, internet installation, renters insurance, a parking permit for the moving van, and the first grocery shop — which runs $150 to $250 because you are buying every staple at once.
