The best bath towels for a first apartment
Two bath towels per person is the right number. The only real decision is cotton or quick-dry microfiber, and that depends entirely on whether you have a dryer.

Towels are the purchase people over-think and over-spend on. Here is the whole decision in two sentences. If you have a dryer, buy cotton and buy the nicest you can afford. If you dry towels on a rack, buy quick-dry microfiber or lightweight cotton and ignore everything about plushness.
A heavy 700-GSM Turkish towel is genuinely lovely and takes two days to dry on a rack in a bathroom with no window. By hour thirty it smells. That is not a quality problem, it is a mismatch between the towel and the apartment.
GSM, which is the only spec that matters
GSM means grams per square meter — towel density. It is the one number worth understanding, and it trades directly against drying time.
| GSM | Feels | Dries on a rack in | Right for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300–400 | Thin, almost like a gym towel | 4–8 hours | A gym bag, or a very humid bathroom. |
| 400–500 | Standard hotel-ish, absorbent enough | About 12 hours | An apartment with no dryer. The practical sweet spot. |
| 500–600 | Noticeably soft and substantial | 18–24 hours | A home with a dryer. |
| 700+ | Plush, luxurious, heavy | 2 days or more | A house with a dryer and a linen cupboard. |
Microfiber sits outside this scale: a 430-GSM waffle-weave microfiber towel dries in roughly a third the time of cotton at the same weight, because the weave moves air through it. That is the specific reason the POLYTE set is on this page.
How many towels you actually need
Two bath towels per person — one in use, one clean — plus two hand towels and a few washcloths for the whole bathroom. Add a third bath towel per person if you do laundry less often than weekly, or if you use a towel at the gym.
Because towel sets are sold in sixes, that means one 6-piece set covers one person completely. Two people need two sets. There is a fuller version of this arithmetic in how many towels do you need.
A genuinely useful tip: buy two cheap sets rather than one expensive set. Having four bath towels for one person means laundry never becomes urgent, and that is worth more day to day than a better towel.
The first wash matters
New towels, especially cotton, are treated with finishes that repel water — which is why a brand-new towel can feel oddly unabsorbent. Fix it once:
- Wash on hot with half the usual detergent and a cup of white vinegar.
- Run a second cycle with no detergent at all.
- Tumble dry or hang fully.
After that, use less detergent than feels right and skip fabric softener entirely — softener coats the fibers and is the main reason towels gradually stop absorbing. If towels start smelling musty, a hot wash with vinegar resets them.
If your building has no dryer
This is the situation most first apartments are in, and it changes the purchase. Buy lightweight cotton or microfiber, and buy a drying rack at the same time — towels draped over a shower rail do not dry, they fester.
A hook on the back of the bathroom door is worth more than a towel rail for the same reason: a towel hung on a hook has air on both sides, while a folded towel on a rail dries only on the outside. See apartment laundry without a washer for the whole setup.
The short version
- Two bath towels per person. One 6-piece set covers one person completely.
- Dryer: buy 500–600 GSM cotton. No dryer: buy 400–500 GSM or quick-dry microfiber.
- Two cheap sets beat one expensive set — laundry stops being urgent.
- Wash new towels with vinegar and no softener, ever. Softener is why towels stop absorbing.

Common questions
How many bath towels do I need for one person?
Two — one in use and one clean while the first is in the wash. A third is worth having if you do laundry less than weekly or take a towel to the gym. A standard 6-piece set (2 bath, 2 hand, 2 washcloths) covers one person completely.
What GSM is best for bath towels?
400 to 500 GSM if you dry towels on a rack, because it dries overnight. 500 to 600 if you have a dryer, because it feels considerably better and drying time stops mattering. Above 700 GSM is lovely and impractical without a dryer.
Why are my new towels not absorbent?
Manufacturing finishes. Wash them hot with a cup of white vinegar and half the usual detergent, then run a second cycle with nothing in it. Then never use fabric softener — it coats the fibers and is the usual reason towels stop absorbing over time.
Are microfiber towels better than cotton?
For an apartment with no dryer, genuinely yes — they dry in roughly a third the time and do not develop the damp smell cotton gets on a rack. Against that, some people simply dislike how synthetic fabric feels on skin, and it holds static in dry winter air. It is a real trade, not a straight upgrade.
How often should you wash bath towels?
Every three or four uses with normal use, assuming the towel dries fully between them. A towel that does not dry properly should be washed sooner — damp fabric is where the musty smell comes from, not the number of uses.
