The terms on which you may use this site. Written to be read, which means it is shorter than most.

By using Key & Crate you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site. Key & Crate is operated by Iron Mako Media, referred to below as “we” and “us”.

What this site is, and is not

Key & Crate publishes buying guides and checklists for setting up a home. Everything here is editorial opinion and general information.

It is not, and must not be relied on as:

  • Legal advice. Where we describe tenancy matters — who is responsible for a repair, how a deposit works — that is a general description. Tenancy law varies by state and locality. For your situation, consult a tenants’ union, a legal aid service, or a lawyer.
  • Financial advice. Our cost figures are planning estimates, not quotations or budgeting advice.
  • Medical or safety certification. Where we discuss fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide or furniture anchoring, we point to the relevant federal agency’s guidance and that guidance governs, not us.
  • Electrical or plumbing instruction. We deliberately advise reporting such work rather than attempting it. Any work you carry out is at your own risk and may require a licensed professional or a permit where you live.
  • A product warranty or guarantee of any kind. Warranties come from the manufacturer or retailer. We offer none.

Accuracy, prices and availability

We take real care with accuracy and publish our method openly in how we pick. Even so:

  • Prices change constantly. Every price here comes from a live retailer lookup and is shown with the date it was checked. Prices older than 48 hours are withdrawn rather than displayed. The price at checkout is the one that applies — always confirm it there.
  • Availability changes. A product in stock when a page was last checked may not be now.
  • Specifications change. Manufacturers revise products, sometimes silently between production runs, without changing the product identifier.
  • Our picks are opinions. Reasonable people will disagree, which is why we publish the component scores and the reasoning rather than only a verdict.

If you find an error, please tell us — factual errors are corrected on the page itself.

Purchases are made with the retailer, not with us. The retailer’s terms, pricing, delivery, returns, warranty and privacy policy govern that transaction entirely. We are not a party to it and cannot assist with an order, a return, a refund or a warranty claim. Contact the retailer for those.

We link to government agencies, standards bodies and other third parties as sources. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or practices. A link is not an endorsement of everything on the destination site.

Our content

The text, structure, scoring, original graphics and layout of this site are our copyright. You may read, print and share pages for your own personal, non-commercial use, and you may quote us with attribution and a link.

You may not, without our written permission:

  • Republish our content, in whole or substantial part, on another site.
  • Use our content to train a commercial machine learning model or to build a competing dataset.
  • Systematically scrape or copy the site.
  • Use our name or branding in a way that suggests we endorse you.

Product names, images and trademarks belong to their respective owners. Product photographs are supplied by the retailer for use alongside links to those products and remain subject to that retailer’s terms.

Acceptable use

Do not attempt to interfere with the site, gain unauthorized access to it, overload it, or use it for anything unlawful. Do not use the contact form to send unsolicited commercial messages.

Disclaimer and limitation of liability

This site is provided “as is”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy of content.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive loss arising from your use of this site, from any product you buy after reading it, or from any work you carry out in reliance on it.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top of the page changes when we do, and continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
