How many towels do you need?
Two bath towels per person: one in use, one in the wash. Add a third if you do laundry less than weekly. Everything else is hand towels and washcloths.

Two bath towels per person is the right number — one in use and one clean while the first is being washed. Add a third per person if you do laundry less than weekly or take a towel to the gym. For a whole bathroom you also want two hand towels and four to six washcloths.
The count, by household
| Household | Bath towels | Hand towels | Washcloths | Sets to buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One person | 2–3 | 2 | 4 | One 6-piece set, ideally two |
| Two people | 4–6 | 2–4 | 6–8 | Two 6-piece sets |
| Two people, no dryer | 6 | 4 | 8 | Three sets — drying time forces the extra |
| Plus a guest room | +2 | +2 | +2 | One extra set, kept separate |
| Plus a gym habit | +1 each | — | — | Or a dedicated thin gym towel |
Towel sets are nearly always sold in sixes — two bath, two hand, two washcloths — which maps neatly onto one person. Our towel roundup covers which set to buy.
Why the number changes without a dryer
This is the part most towel guides skip. A heavy cotton towel on a drying rack in a bathroom with no window takes one to two days to dry properly. That means the towel you washed on Sunday is not usable on Monday, so the two-towel rotation breaks down.
Two ways out, and either works:
- Own three towels per person instead of two. At under $20 a set, the cheapest fix.
- Buy quick-dry microfiber. It dries in roughly a third the time, so two towels genuinely is enough. See the POLYTE set in our roundup.
Also worth knowing: a hook beats a rail. A towel hung on a hook has air on both sides; a towel folded over a rail dries only on the outside. Over-door hooks cost about $12 and need no drilling.
How often to wash them
Every three or four uses, assuming the towel dries fully between them. The guidance is about moisture rather than a fixed count — a towel that stays damp should be washed sooner, because damp fabric is where the musty smell comes from.
- Bath towels: every 3–4 uses.
- Hand towels: every 2–3 days. They stay damper and more people touch them.
- Washcloths: after every use. They are used on skin and stay wet.
- Gym towels: after every use, without exception.
Wash towels on warm or hot with less detergent than you think, no fabric softener ever, and dry them fully. If towels have already gone musty, a hot wash with a cup of white vinegar and no detergent resets them.
What each size is actually for
- Bath towel (about 27 × 52 in): the standard. What you need two of.
- Bath sheet (about 35 × 60 in): larger, nicer, takes much longer to dry. A dryer-only purchase.
- Hand towel (about 16 × 28 in): by the sink. Two so one can be in the wash.
- Washcloth (about 13 × 13 in): for washing. Four to six, because they go in the laundry after every use.
- Bath mat: not a towel. See our bath mat picks.
The short version
- Two bath towels per person. Three if you do laundry less than weekly or have no dryer.
- One standard 6-piece set covers exactly one person. Buy two sets if you can.
- Bath towels every 3–4 uses, hand towels every 2–3 days, washcloths every use.
- A hook dries a towel far better than a rail — air gets to both sides.

Common questions
How many bath towels does one person need?
Two — one in use, one clean. Three if you do laundry less than weekly, or if you have no dryer and dry towels on a rack, where a heavy towel can take two days.
How often should you wash bath towels?
Every three or four uses, provided the towel dries fully in between. Hand towels need washing every two or three days because they stay damper; washcloths go in after every use.
How many towels for a couple?
Four to six bath towels, two to four hand towels and six to eight washcloths — so two 6-piece sets, or three if your building has no dryer. Keep a separate set aside if you have guests.
Why do my towels smell musty even after washing?
Either they are not drying fully, or detergent and softener residue has built up. Run them hot with a cup of white vinegar and no detergent, dry them completely, and then use less detergent and no softener going forward.
