What size mattress topper for a dorm bed?
Twin XL — 39 by 80 inches — and two inches thick. The size is fixed by the mattress; the thickness is a trade against whether your sheets still fit.

A dorm mattress topper should be Twin XL — 39 inches wide by 80 inches long — and 2 inches thick. Twin XL is five inches longer than a regular Twin. Two inches is the thickness that fixes the mattress while still working under a standard fitted sheet.
The dimensions, and the mistake
| Bed size | Dimensions | Topper to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Twin XL (nearly all dorms) | 39 × 80 in | Twin XL. Buy this. |
| Twin (rare in dorms) | 39 × 75 in | Twin — 5 inches shorter. |
| Full (some campus apartments) | 54 × 75 in | Full. |
| Queen (off-campus) | 60 × 80 in | Queen. |
A Twin topper on a Twin XL mattress leaves five inches of bare mattress at the foot of the bed, which you will feel, and the sheet then has nothing to hold the topper against. It is the single most common sizing error in dorm shopping — see our Twin XL bedding guide for the same issue applied to sheets.
Verify on your school’s housing page. Nearly every US campus uses Twin XL, and the handful that do not are worth five minutes of checking.
Thickness: the real decision
| Thickness | Comfort | Sheets | Move-out | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 in | Marginal gain | Standard sheets fine | Easy | Not worth buying. |
| 2 in | Large gain — you stop feeling the mattress | Standard sheets usually fit | Rolls to about 2 × 1 ft | The right answer for nearly everyone. |
| 3 in | Slightly more | Needs deep-pocket (14 in) sheets | Noticeably bulkier | Only for a genuinely bad mattress. |
| 4 in | Diminishing returns | Deep-pocket, and still slips | Awkward | Too much. Skip. |
The deep-pocket sheet problem, explained
A standard fitted sheet is cut for a mattress up to about 12 inches deep. Dorm mattresses are typically 6 to 8 inches. Add a 2-inch topper and you are at 8 to 10 inches — comfortably within what a standard sheet handles.
Add a 3-inch topper and you are at 9 to 11 inches, which is near the limit, and with a mattress protector on top you can exceed it. The sheet then pulls free at the corners every night, which is genuinely maddening.
Two consequences worth planning for:
- If you buy a 3-inch topper, budget about $20 more for deep-pocket sheets rated to 14 inches. Treat it as a $60 purchase, not a $90-versus-$40 comparison.
- Put the fitted sheet over the topper, not under it. The sheet is what holds the topper in place; underneath it, the foam slides.
Measure the mattress, not just the room
Dorm mattress depth varies between about 6 and 10 inches depending on the age of the stock. If you can, check it during move-in before ordering a topper and sheets. If you cannot:
- Buy a 2-inch topper, which works with every depth.
- Buy deep-pocket sheets anyway — they fit a shallow mattress perfectly well with a little extra tuck, where the reverse is not true.
That combination is the safe choice when you are shopping blind in July for a room you have not seen.
The short version
- Twin XL: 39 × 80 inches. A regular Twin topper leaves five inches of bare mattress.
- Two inches thick. It fixes the mattress and standard sheets still reach.
- A 3-inch topper also costs you ~$20 in deep-pocket sheets. Factor it into the price.
- Sheet goes OVER the topper. Under it, the foam slides every night.

Common questions
What size mattress topper fits a dorm bed?
Twin XL — 39 by 80 inches. That is five inches longer than a standard Twin. Nearly every US dorm uses Twin XL, but confirm on your school’s housing page before ordering.
Is Twin XL the same as Twin?
No. Both are 39 inches wide, but a Twin is 75 inches long and a Twin XL is 80. A Twin topper or sheet on a Twin XL mattress leaves five inches uncovered at the foot of the bed.
Do I need deep-pocket sheets with a mattress topper?
With a 2-inch topper, usually not — standard sheets reach. With a 3-inch topper or a topper plus a mattress protector, yes: budget about $20 for sheets rated to 14 inches, or the fitted sheet will pull free at the corners nightly.
Does the sheet go over or under the mattress topper?
Over. The fitted sheet goes over the topper and is what holds it against the mattress. Putting the sheet underneath leaves the topper loose to shift and slide every night.
How thick should a dorm mattress topper be?
Two inches. Thicker gives diminishing comfort gains while creating a sheet-fit problem and becoming harder to move out. Only go to 3 inches if you have slept on the mattress and found it genuinely bad.
