The best screwdriver sets for home use

You need two scales of screwdriver: one with torque for furniture and door hinges, one precise enough for glasses and a laptop. One good set covers both.

Screwdrivers divide into two genuinely different categories, and buying only one is the usual mistake.

  • Standard drivers apply real torque: flat-pack furniture, door hinges, outlet plates, cabinet handles, appliance panels. You need leverage and a comfortable grip.
  • Precision drivers handle tiny fasteners: glasses, a laptop back panel, a games controller, a watch strap. You need accuracy, the right bit profiles, and no leverage at all.

A precision set will not drive a furniture screw — you will round the head. A standard driver cannot engage a laptop’s Torx T5. Hence our top pick is a set that includes both.

Why a ratcheting driver is worth the extra $10

A ratcheting driver lets you turn a screw without lifting and repositioning your hand each quarter turn. On one screw that saves nothing. On the forty screws in a flat-pack wardrobe it is the difference between twenty minutes and fifty.

It also means you can apply constant pressure while turning, which is what actually prevents a bit slipping out and chewing the screw head. If you buy one upgrade to a basic tool kit, this is the one — and it is why it is first on our upgrade list.

The mechanism is the long-term wear point. On a $15 driver expect a few years; on a $30 one, considerably more.

The bit types you need, and the ones you will meet

Screw head types in a home
TypeLooks likeWhere you meet it
Phillips (PH)A cross with tapered wallsMost furniture, most household screws. PH1 and PH2 cover almost everything.
Slotted / flathead (SL)A single straight slotOlder fittings, outlet plates, terminal screws
Pozidriv (PZ)A cross with extra small lines between the armsEuropean flat-pack furniture. A Phillips bit slips in it.
Hex / AllenA hexagonal socketFlat-pack furniture bolts, bike components
Torx (T)A six-pointed starAppliances, laptops (T5/T6), modern fittings
PentalobeA five-lobed flowerApple devices. Only in precision sets.
Square / RobertsonA square socketSome North American construction screws
Tri-point / tri-wingA three-armed YGames consoles, some laptops

The two that catch people out: Pozidriv, which looks like Phillips and strips if you use a Phillips bit on it, and Torx T5 and T6, which most cheap precision sets omit and which most laptops need.

Magnetic tips, and why they matter more than they should

A magnetized bit holds the screw while you position it, which means you can start a screw one-handed in an awkward spot — under a sink, inside a cabinet, at the back of a wardrobe. It also means a dropped screw sticks to the bit rather than disappearing into carpet.

Nearly all sets claim magnetic tips and the strength varies a lot. If yours is weak you can magnetize a bit by stroking it along a strong magnet in one direction twenty times, which works and is slightly satisfying.

Fixed shafts or a bit holder

A genuine preference rather than a right answer:

  • A bit holder (one handle, many bits) is compact, cheap and covers every profile. The cost is that bits fall out, get lost, and the holder adds a little flex.
  • Fixed-shaft drivers (a complete screwdriver per size) give better feel and nothing to lose, and take considerably more drawer space for fewer profiles.

For a home, a bit holder for standard work plus a small set of fixed precision drivers is a good combination — which is roughly what the GRENPRO and Amazon Basics picks on this page represent.

The short version

  • You need two scales: torque for furniture, precision for electronics. One set should do both.
  • A ratcheting driver turns a 50-minute flat-pack into a 20-minute one. Best $10 upgrade there is.
  • Watch for Pozidriv (looks like Phillips, strips with a Phillips bit) and Torx T5/T6 for laptops.
  • Magnetic tips let you start a screw one-handed in an awkward spot. Worth checking the strength.

Common questions

What screwdriver set do I need for home use?

One that covers both scales: a ratcheting driver with Phillips and slotted bits for furniture and fittings, plus precision bits including Torx T5 and T6 for electronics. A combined set around $29 saves buying two.

What is the difference between Phillips and Pozidriv?

Pozidriv has four extra small lines between the cross arms. A Phillips bit will turn a Pozidriv screw for a while and then cam out and strip the head — which is why European flat-pack furniture is so often blamed on bad screws. Use the right bit; both are in any decent set.

Is a ratcheting screwdriver worth it?

Yes, for about $10 extra. You keep constant pressure on the screw while turning, which both halves the time on flat-pack furniture and prevents the bit camming out and chewing the head. It is the best single upgrade to a basic tool kit.

What size screwdriver do I need for a laptop?

Usually Torx T5 or T6, sometimes Phillips PH00 or a Pentalobe on Apple devices. Many cheap precision sets omit T5 and T6, which is precisely the omission that leaves you unable to open the thing. Check the bit list before buying.

Why do screws strip when I use a screwdriver?

Usually the wrong bit size or type — a Phillips bit in a Pozidriv screw, or a PH1 where a PH2 belongs. After that it is insufficient downward pressure, which lets the bit cam out. Match the bit, press firmly, and turn slowly.
