The best shower curtains for a small bathroom
Measure your rail before anything else — a standard 72-inch curtain in a 36-inch stall bunches badly. Then decide whether you want one layer or two.

Three decisions, in this order: what size, one layer or two, and plastic or fabric. Get the size wrong and nothing else helps.
Sizing, which is where most people go wrong
| Your shower | Curtain size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard bathtub | 72 × 72 in | The default. Most curtains sold are this. |
| Corner or stall shower | 36 × 72 in (stall) | A 72-in-wide curtain in a stall bunches into a thick fold that holds water. |
| Walk-in with a short screen | 54 × 78 in or a stall size | Measure the rail; this varies a lot. |
| Clawfoot tub | 180 in wraparound | A specialist size — check before assuming. |
| Extra-long drop | 72 × 84 in | For a high rail. A short curtain lets water out at the bottom. |
Measure the rail length and the drop from rail to about 2 inches above the floor. A curtain that pools on the floor wicks water out of the tub, which is the single most common cause of a wet bathroom floor.
One layer or two
Convention is a decorative outer curtain plus a waterproof inner liner. In a small bathroom that is two layers hanging in a space that does not really have room for them, and the inner liner is the one that touches you.
A single waterproof fabric curtain does both jobs. It is machine washable so it lasts years instead of months, it looks like a furnishing rather than a bin bag, and it halves what is in the shower with you. That is why the ALYVIA SPRING fabric curtain is on this page, and our fabric vs plastic liner comparison goes through the trade properly.
The counter-argument is real: a plastic liner costs $7 and you throw it away when it gets moldy, which requires no effort at all. A fabric curtain requires you to actually wash it.
The new-liner smell, and how to avoid it
A new PEVA or vinyl liner frequently arrives with a strong chemical smell that takes a day or two to air out. That is off-gassing of residual plasticizers.
The fix is to buy a liner certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which tests for harmful substances in textiles and effectively rules out the worst of it. That certification is the specific reason the Barossa Design liner is our top pick — for about two dollars more than an uncertified liner, it is usable the hour you hang it.
If you already own a smelly liner: hang it outside or over a balcony rail for a day, or wash it on cold with a little detergent and hang it to dry.
Keeping mold off it, which is mostly about airflow
- Spread the curtain out fully after showering. A bunched curtain holds water in the folds, and that is where mold starts. This single habit roughly doubles a liner’s life.
- Run the extractor fan for fifteen minutes after, or leave the door open if there is no fan.
- Wash a fabric curtain monthly on warm with detergent and a cup of white vinegar. Hang it back up damp so it dries flat without creases.
- A plastic liner can go in the machine too — cold, with a couple of towels for abrasion. It works more often than people expect.
- Magnets or a weighted hem keep the liner against the tub instead of wrapping around you, and also stop it billowing inward.
The short version
- Measure the rail. A 72-inch curtain in a 36-inch stall bunches and leaks.
- The curtain should stop about 2 inches above the floor — pooling wicks water out.
- Buy an Oeko-Tex certified liner to avoid two days of chemical smell.
- Spread the curtain out after every shower. It roughly doubles how long it lasts.

Common questions
What size shower curtain for a small bathroom?
72 × 72 inches for a standard bathtub, or a 36 × 72 inch stall size for a corner or stall shower. Using a full-width curtain in a stall creates a thick bunched fold that holds water and grows mold. Measure your rail before ordering.
Do I need a shower curtain and a liner?
Not necessarily. A single waterproof fabric curtain does both jobs, which is genuinely better in a small shower because there is one less layer against you — and it is machine washable, so it lasts years. Two layers only earn their place if you want a specific decorative outer curtain.
Why does my new shower curtain liner smell?
Off-gassing of residual plasticizers from PEVA or vinyl. Airing it outside for a day fixes it, or washing it cold and hanging it to dry. To avoid it entirely, buy a liner certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 — about two dollars more and usable immediately.
How do you stop a shower curtain from going moldy?
Spread it out fully after every shower instead of leaving it bunched — water sits in the folds and that is where mold starts. Run the fan for fifteen minutes afterwards, and wash a fabric curtain monthly with detergent and white vinegar.
Can you wash a plastic shower curtain liner?
Yes — cold cycle, a little detergent, and throw in a couple of towels so there is something to scrub against. Hang it straight back up while damp so it dries without creases. It works more reliably than most people expect and buys you several more months.
