Air fryer vs toaster oven: which one for a small kitchen?
In a kitchen with one free square foot, this is a real either/or. The answer depends almost entirely on whether your apartment oven works.

Buy an air fryer if your apartment has a working oven. Buy an air-fry toaster oven if it does not, or if your oven is unreliable. An air fryer crisps better and preheats faster; a toaster oven bakes, toasts and takes a tray, which an air fryer cannot. You do not need both in a small kitchen.
These two appliances overlap more than their marketing suggests. Both are small convection ovens: a heating element plus a fan. The difference is the geometry. An air fryer puts a small basket very close to the element with a hard fan, which makes things crisp. A toaster oven puts a flat rack further from a larger element with a gentler fan, which makes things bake.

Pick the air fryer if…
- Your oven works and you mainly want faster weeknight cooking.
- You cook for one or two people.
- Your free counter is roughly a foot square.
- Crisping is what you are after — fries, wings, roasted vegetables, reheating anything that was once crunchy.
- You want the basket in the dishwasher. This matters more to long-term use than any cooking difference.
Pick the toaster oven if…
- Your apartment oven is broken, filthy, or heats to an unknowable temperature.
- You bake — a tray of cookies, a small sheet-pan dinner, a frozen pizza.
- You eat toast. Air fryers are genuinely bad at toast.
- You are cooking for three or four and a 4-quart basket means cooking in two batches.
- You would rather have one appliance that does eight jobs adequately than one that does two jobs well.
The option most lists ignore
In the smallest kitchens the right answer is sometimes neither, and a 0.7 cu ft microwave instead. A microwave does not crisp anything and nobody pretends otherwise, but it reheats a plate of food in ninety seconds, costs about the same, and takes roughly the same counter as an air fryer while being the single most-used appliance in most apartments.
A reasonable buying order for a first apartment is: microwave first, then air fryer when budget allows, then a toaster oven only if the built-in oven is unusable. All three at once is more counter than most apartments have.
One shared constraint
Both appliances draw 1,400 to 1,800 watts. In an older building where the kitchen shares a 15-amp circuit with other rooms, running either alongside a microwave can trip the breaker. Plug both directly into wall outlets — never a power strip — and if the breaker trips, move one to an outlet on a different circuit rather than living with it.
The short version
- Working oven: buy the air fryer. Broken or unreliable oven: buy the air-fry toaster oven.
- Air fryers crisp better and preheat in a third the time. Toaster ovens bake and toast.
- You do not need both in a small kitchen, and a microwave often beats either as a first buy.
- Both draw 1,400–1,800 W. Wall outlet only, and watch the circuit in an old building.
The picks in detail

#1 · The default, if it fits
Ninja AF101 Air Fryer, 4 qt
The air fryer most people should buy: a 4-quart basket that genuinely feeds two, a ceramic-coated crisper plate that washes clean, and a brand that still sells parts years later.
- Fits a small kitchen
- 7.8
- Value
- 8.6
- Durability
- 9.0
- Easy to clean
- 9.2
What we like
- Basket and plate are dishwasher safe — the difference between using it and resenting it
- The dehydrate setting is not a gimmick if you make jerky or dried fruit
- Replacement baskets are actually available
What to know
- Taller than it looks — measure under your upper cabinets, not just the counter
- Loud at full speed
- 4 qt is two portions, not four
Specifications
- 4 qt ceramic-coated nonstick basket and crisper plate
- Air fry, roast, reheat and dehydrate
- 105°F–400°F range
- Dishwasher-safe basket; about 11 × 11 in of counter
Who it is for
One or two people with about a square foot of free counter. If your counter is genuinely full, buy the bella Slim instead.

#2 · More cooking modes
Instant Vortex 4 qt Mini, 6-in-1
Same 4-quart class as the Ninja with broil and bake added, which matters more than it sounds if this appliance is standing in for an oven you do not have.
- Fits a small kitchen
- 8.2
- Value
- 8.8
- Durability
- 7.6
- Easy to clean
- 8.0
What we like
- Broil is the mode missing from most small air fryers
- Compact square footprint sits well in a corner
- Clear program buttons — no manual needed
What to know
- Basket coating is less robust than the Ninja's over time
- Preheat adds a few minutes that the listing times do not include
- Controls beep loudly and cannot be muted
Specifications

- Air fry, broil, roast, dehydrate, bake and reheat
- One-touch programs with a digital display

Who it is for
A studio with a single hot plate and no real oven, where broil earns its keep.

#3 · The size that actually fits
Toshiba 0.7 cu ft Countertop Microwave, 700 W
0.7 cubic feet and 700 watts is the apartment sweet spot — it takes a dinner plate, draws little enough not to trip an old circuit, and Toshiba's control panels outlast the price.
- Fits a small kitchen
- 9.2
- Value
- 8.8
- Durability
- 8.6
- Easy to clean
- 8.4
What we like
- The mute button is worth more than it sounds in a studio
- Takes a full dinner plate, which some 0.7 models do not
- Modest power draw for shared or older wiring
What to know
- 700 W reheats slowly — add a third to pack times
- No convection or grill
- Interior light is dim
Specifications
- 0.7 cu ft capacity, 700 W
- Fits a 10 in dinner plate on the turntable
- Six one-touch presets plus weight defrost

#4 · A genuinely narrow counter
bella Fits-anywhere Slim 4 qt Air Fryer
Built tall and narrow instead of square, so it slots into the gap beside the sink where a Ninja will not go. That is the whole argument for it, and it is a good one.
- Fits a small kitchen
- 9.6
- Value
- 8.2
- Durability
- 7.2
- Easy to clean
- 8.4
What we like
- Fits counters that defeat every other 4 qt fryer

- Light enough to lift into a cupboard between uses
What to know
- The tall basket stacks food, so you shake more often for even results
- Fewer modes than the Instant
- Shorter brand track record for parts
Specifications
- 4 qt capacity in a narrow upright body
- Non-toxic coating, PFAS-free
- Digital controls with preset programs
- Markedly narrower footprint than square 4 qt models
Who it is for
A galley kitchen where you have measured the gap and it is under a foot wide.
Common questions
Do I need a toaster oven and an air fryer?
In a small kitchen, no. They are both small convection ovens and the overlap is large. Buy the air fryer if your oven works and you want crisping; buy the air-fry toaster oven if your oven does not work or you bake and toast. Owning both is mainly a counter-space decision, and most apartments cannot afford it.
Can an air fryer replace an oven?
Partly. It roasts, crisps and reheats very well, and it does not heat your whole apartment in summer. It cannot bake a tray of anything, cannot fit a sheet pan, and cannot toast properly. If your oven is unusable, a toaster-oven combo replaces more of it.
Which is cheaper to run, an air fryer or a toaster oven?
The air fryer, slightly — it preheats in two or three minutes rather than five to seven, so a typical 20-minute cook draws power for less total time. The difference over a year is small, in the order of a few dollars; it should not drive the decision.
Is an air fryer better than a microwave for reheating?
For anything that should be crisp — pizza, fries, fried chicken, pastry — yes, by a wide margin. For soup, rice, vegetables or a plate of leftovers, the microwave is faster and just as good. They are complementary, which is why most apartments end up with both eventually.
