Drill vs impact driver for a first home

They look almost identical and they are not interchangeable. Buy the drill first — the impact driver has no clutch, which makes it the wrong tool for the jobs a first home actually has.

Buy the drill driver first. It makes holes and drives screws, and its clutch stops you over-driving or stripping them — which is exactly what a first home needs. An impact driver drives long fasteners into dense material very fast and has no clutch, so it will drive a furniture screw straight through the panel.

What each one actually does

  • A drill driver rotates. It has a chuck that accepts round or hex bits of any size, two speed ranges, and a numbered clutch collar that limits torque. It drills holes and drives screws with control.
  • An impact driver rotates and delivers rapid rotational hammer blows — thousands per minute. That concussive action drives long screws into dense timber with very little effort and no cam-out. It takes only 1/4-inch hex bits, and it has no clutch.

The impact mechanism is genuinely impressive and it is the wrong default. Without a clutch, nothing stops the tool when the screw is seated — it keeps driving. In chipboard furniture that means through the panel.

When the combo kit earns its place

A drill and impact driver combo is around $99 to $149 and is genuinely the right purchase for some people:

  • A deck, a fence or a shed. Hundreds of long screws into structural timber is exactly the impact driver’s job, and doing it with a drill is slow and tiring.
  • A lot of flat-pack furniture at once. Furnishing a whole house. Use the drill for the fiddly screws and the impact driver on its lowest setting for the long bolts.
  • Any renovation work. Subfloor, framing, cabinet installation.
  • Automotive or bike work — an impact driver removes seized bolts a wrench will not shift.

The practical advantage of owning both that nobody mentions: you stop swapping bits. Drill bit in one, driver bit in the other, and a hundred pilot-hole-then-screw operations stop involving two hundred bit changes.

Who should buy only the drill

Most first-home owners and nearly every renter:

  • Your jobs are furniture, shelves, picture hooks, curtain rails and a loose hinge.
  • You have no deck, fence or renovation planned.
  • You want one tool, one battery, one charger, one thing to store.
  • Your budget is $65, not $130.

A drill driver does every one of those jobs well. See our drill picks — the kits with bits included are usable the day they arrive.

If you do own an impact driver, use it carefully

  1. Use impact-rated bits. Standard driver bits shatter under impact action. They are a different, tougher steel and they are cheap.
  2. Start on the lowest speed setting and feather the trigger. Most impact drivers have three speed modes; mode one is for small fasteners.
  3. Stop the instant the screw seats. There is no clutch to stop it for you — your finger is the clutch.
  4. Never use it on chipboard or MDF furniture at a high setting. It will go straight through.
  5. Wear ear protection for extended use. They are genuinely loud.

The short version

  • Buy the drill driver first. Its clutch is what protects screws and panels.
  • An impact driver has no clutch and will drive a furniture screw through the panel.
  • Buy the combo if you have decking, fencing or renovation ahead — not for furniture.
  • If you own an impact driver, use impact-rated bits. Standard bits shatter.

Common questions

Do I need an impact driver or a drill?

A drill driver, for a first home. It drills holes and drives screws, and its clutch prevents over-driving and stripping — the two mistakes beginners make. An impact driver is for long fasteners into dense timber and has no clutch.

Can an impact driver drill holes?

Poorly. It only accepts 1/4-inch hex-shank bits, so most drill bits will not fit, and the impact action is wrong for clean hole-making. Hex-shank drill bits exist and work adequately in a pinch, not well.

Will an impact driver strip screws?

It cams out far less than a drill — the impact action keeps the bit seated. The risk is the opposite one: with no clutch it will keep driving past the point the screw is seated, straight through a chipboard panel. Your trigger finger is the only clutch.

Is a drill and impact driver combo kit worth it?

If you have decking, fencing, a shed or renovation work ahead, yes — around $99 to $149 for two tools sharing batteries. For furniture, shelves and picture hooks, the drill alone does everything and costs half.

Do impact drivers need special bits?

Yes — impact-rated bits, made from a tougher and slightly more flexible steel. Standard driver bits shatter under sustained impact action, which is both wasteful and a flying-fragment hazard. They cost little more.
